hydrometer from Glenfarclas functions by the same principle as the hydrometers
which are used by the distilleries during the distillation process.
Most whiskies mature in oak casks at a 'natural' alcohol content
(cask strength) of app. 60% ABV (app. 105 Proof).
The strength of a whisky is normally reduced during bottling to 40 - 43%
ABV (70 Proof).
This hydrometer should help you, to determine the strength
reduction by adding water by yourself. Take a slim glass and let the
hydrometer float in e.g. Glenfarclas 105.
At normal room temperature (20°C), the hydrometer will show
60% ABV. The display varies at different temperatures. By the time, you
will get a feeling, that you need quite an amount of water to reduce such a
strong whisky like the Glenfarclas 105 to 40% ABV.
Hint: You need less whisky
for the measurement, if you use a standard test tube for the measurement. The
hydrometer can easily float inside the test tube.
