Glenmorangie was the undisputed pioneer of wood finishing, and their Port-matured Quinta Ruban is arguably the cream of the crop. On the nose, lovely notes of raspberry jam, marzipan and cinnamon rolls intermingle with vanilla cream, honey and hints of sage. Light and complex, the palate unfolds with mixed berries, dark chocolate and peppery wood spices, interrupted by pineapple, mint and a touch of vinegar. Lingering oak, dried fruits and nutmeg remain in the medium finish. A genuinely interesting malt, well-made and good value for money!

Nosing: Getrocknete Früchte Zitrus Kräuter Beeren Karamell
Dark and rich, high intensity. Port wine. Dried fruits. Candied citrus peel. Dried plums. Something a bit herbal, like thyme. With water this opens up a lot with bright toffee and red fruit notes.

Taste: Getrocknete Früchte Rosine Dattel Gewürze Eiche Erdbeere
Intense medium sweet arrival. Lots of dried fruits. Raisins and Dates. Spiciness builds over time. There's a savoury, almost smokey tang to it. I'm pretty sure it's caused by barrel influence though. Oaky wood flavours come through towards the end. With some water, the intensity backs off and dried strawberry shows up on the palate.

Finish: Gewürze Kaffee Dunkle Schokolade
Very long. Lingering wood spice, coffee, dark chocolate. Nearly gets to bitterness, but not quite. With water added, the slight bitterness in the finish dies back and it finishes more tannic like black tea.

Comment:
I'm not a big fan of the standard Glenmorangie, but this is a real stand out bottle. The nose is as good as I've seen in a port aged malt. Loads of complexity to unpack. On the palate it's intense and interesting and can take a drop of water thanks to sensible proofing. The finish has good staying power and development too. It's been a long time since I felt compelled to amend notes for added water, but this release warrants it as it transforms dramatically. Definitely one to look out for
