Glenmorangie Nectar d'Or - Sauternes Cask Finish

Sauternes is a well known wine-growing region in France. Very sweet White Wines are produced in this region. The 'golden nectar' first matured like every bottling of the Extra Matured series in Bourbon casks and then finished in White Wine casks. In 2019, the series was rearranged: Glenmorangie extended the maturation duration for Single Malts. Therefore this Single Malt Nectar d'Or is without an age statement. New design.

Nosing: Pfirsich Zitronenschale Gras
Fruity wine notes. White grape, Stone fruit, peach apricot. It has an underlying dusty minearality which stops it being too syrupy. Slight citrus peel and grassy vegetal note.

Taste: Süße Früchte Eiche
Sweet arrival. Medium to full bodied, Fruit syrup like you get in canned fruit, but the sweetness is held in check by wood tanin which borders on bitter.

Finish: Eiche
medium to long but quite dry with lots of resinous wood. That bitter note remains.

Comment:
This is a little bit disappointing to be honest. The nose promises a great deal and is consistent with other sauternes finished whiskies I've tried. On the palate however it shows little of the character I was expecting. Something about the oak interaction has made it quite bitter, and the usual fruity distillery character of Glenmorangie is getting lost in a syrupy morass. The finish continues that trend with lots of bitter oak sap. I understand that this used to be quite a good 12 year old release. It seems the move to NAS hasn't done it any good.
