Being a more restrained and virtually unpeated version of an Islay whisky, Bunnahabhain 12 tends to be overlooked - which is a shame! The superb quality (46.3% ABV, non-chill filtered and natural color) brings out the maritime character of this Single Malt. The nose is very engaging, intense and robust with seaweed, iodine, dark fruits and a complex, nutty creaminess. Tastewise, delicate sherry and a rich toffee note harmonize with dark chocolate, walnuts and a hint of oak. With a long, sweet and spicy finish, the whisky underscores its outstanding quality.

Nosing: Orange Sherry Vanille Karamell
Intense and fruity. Orange peel sherry character, much more so than I remember in the past. Salted caramel and vanilla. The smokiness if there is any is as good as undetectable, I remember it coming through in previous bottles but this is much more fruit led.

Taste: Sherry Früchte Vanille Lagerfeuer
Intense and sweet arrival. Sherry again, fresh mixed fruit and vanilla. A background hint of woodsmoke. Very viscous mouth feel.

Finish: Eiche Süße Gewürze
Long and sweet with some oakiness showing through. Residual spiciness.

Comment:
I hadn't had a bottle of this in a while and decided to revisit it. I think its changed a bit since I last had it, the sherry influence is definitely more pronounced, not that that's a bad thing. The flavour is intense, and although I very much prefer to see whisky bottled at higher percentages I think this can actually take a generous drop of water just to calm it down a little. This is definitely one of my favourite standard bottlings and although its not quite how I remember it, its still very good.
