Nosing:
Lots and lots of peat smoke, a slightly antiseptic note. Then once the nose acclimatises it becomes sweeter with butterscotch caramel and nuttiness.
Taste:
Sweet arrival then the smoke comes through. Warm and rich, a touch of coal tar.
Finish:
Long, sweet and smoky, goes dry at the very end.
Comment:
I first had this Laphroaig early on when I started drinking whisky and this was definitely a mistake. I wasn't ready for it and I immediatly took a disliking to it. A couple of years later and I've come back to it with a new appreciation. Its powerful stuff and you have to take your time with it, but it is brilliantly balanced. The alcohol is high, but it really doesn't need water. Also, you absolutely have to open this bottle a couple of days before drinking it and get some air in it. There's an initial sourness that goes away after it oxidises a little and improves it no end.
