This 12-year-old Speysider appears to be the tamed version of the excellent Aberlour A'bunadh, even though it is a vatting of both ex-bourbon and ex-sherry matured whisky. Fresh, citrusy and a little bit shy at first nosing, the aroma unfolds with tropical fruits, cloves and hints of marzipan. Despite its low ABV, the taste is surprisingly strong and fruity-spicy with lots of blueberries, plums and ginger. The finish is of medium length with notes of milk chocolate, baked apple and wood tannins. An easily accessible and quite affordable Single Malt with character.

Nosing: Fruit Apple Vanilla Sherry Sweet
Fruity with red apple, Sherry, vanilla and honey. There's a sort of menthol note that slowly dissipates as it sits in the glass.

Taste: Sherry Pear Sweet Raisin Vanilla
Medium sweet sherry arrival. Mixed fruitiness but mostly pears, and raisin with vanilla. There's a slight alcohol nip on the tip of the tongue but nothing excessive.

Finish: Oak Fruit Sweet
Medium short and oaky with mixed fruits

Comment:
I thought I'd check out this version of Aberlour being a big fan of the A'bunadh series. I can see the distillery character shared between them but this is a mixed bag for me. The nose is good but the palate and particularly the finish are a little one dimensional. Still, it was a value proposition so I'm not overly disappointed, worth trying but nothing to write home about.
