Kyrö

Kyrö Distillery is a young Finnish distillery near the coast to the Baltic Sea. The idea to found the distillery was born during a visit to the sauna by five friends. Besides the Kyrö Malt Rye Whisky, Gin is also produced there.

Details about the Distillery

The Whisky

For their Single Malt Rye Whisky, the distillery uses 100% malted rye, which is rather unusual for Whisky production in Europe. The Finnish Whisky is double distilled and then matured in new American white oak casks.

The Kyrö Wood Smoke Malt Rye Whisky is also a 100% Rye Whisky that is additionally smoked. According to an old Nordic custom, the rye is smoked in a 100-year-old barn with a hint of alder smoke. The rye aromas are supported by a rather delicate note of smoke. The maturation of this Whisky takes place in ex-Bourbon, French oak and new American white oak casks.

The Kyrö's Choice: Rye Whisky with Marsala Finish has been in the range since 2021. This Whisky matures in Marsala casks and was specially selected for Germany by German Team Kyrö.

The Gin

Sixteen different botanicals are used for the Kyrö Gin. Twelve of them are dried, ten are macerated, two are added to the aroma basket inside the still and four of the herbs are fresh. Birch leaves, meadowsweet and wood sorrel are picked in the area. The base is a (raw) rye spirit. Inspired by local nature, the Finnish Gin captures the mood of a sunrise in a misty meadow.

Kyrö Dark Gin contains 17 spices and botanicals and matures for three to twelve months in American oak barrels. The harsh weather in Finland with violent storms, during which people seek shelter from the elements together, was the inspiration for this Gin.

Next in line is the Kyrö Pink Gin, which celebrates the equality of all people and can therefore be enjoyed equally by all. It gets its pink colour by using natural ingredients from Finnish forests and gardens such as lingonberries, strawberries and rhubarb.

The Kyrö x Ki No Bi Gin was created in cooperation with the Kyoto Distillery, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Finland. For this, both distilleries selected their best local botanicals.

Another co-production was developed with the Irish Teeling Distillery. The result was the Kyrö x Teeling Cask Aged Gin with distilled Guiness and blackberries, which was matured in Teeling Whiskey casks.

The Production

For its Whiskies and Gins, Kyrö Distillery uses pure water from Isokyrö and only whole rye grain, even though it is the most demanding grain to distil. But Finland also grows mainly rye, which has been cultivated there for more than 2,000 years. For a long time, rye bread was one of the staples of Finnish cuisine, as the grain can grow even in nutrient-poor soil and under the harshest conditions. Kyrö trusts in rye and this is how the distillery's motto "In Rye we trust" was born. Moreover, in summer the sun shines almost all night, which gives the rye its taste and quality.

The fermentation lasts six days, after which the first distillation is carried out, using a low wine distillation. The second distillation is a spirit distillation.

The Warehouses

Due to the steadily increasing demand, a new warehouse was also needed. The façade is inspired by the typical wooden barns of the region. However, as safety requirements had to be considered, such as the fire resistance of the warehouse, the outer wall elements were cast in cement and coloured dark. The boards of the old, demolished barn provided the form for this, so that the resulting wooden structure looks amazingly real.

The History

The Kyrö Distillery Company was founded in 2012. The decisive factor was a visit to the sauna by five friends who drank Rye Whisky and wondered why no one in Finland was making Whisky from rye.

After a few test runs - the first batch was made on a borrowed still at the parents' house of one of the founders - the first spirit was finally distilled on the company's own still in an old dairy in Napue in the municipality of Isokyrö in 2014.

While waiting for the Whisky, which now had to mature for at least three years, Kyrö also tried its hand at making Gin, and quite successfully. Surprised by the great reception of Kyrö Napue Gin, which sold out virtually overnight, the founders felt compelled to devote themselves more to Gin than Whisky production. The distillery's first Whisky was therefore only bottled in very small batches in 2017, of which only 50 bottles came to Germany. However, these were not sold freely, but only delivered to selected bars.

The Visitor Centre

Distillery tours and tastings are offered through the Kyrö Visitor Centre and can be booked online. There is also a restaurant on site where reservations can be made for groups of six or more and which specialises in using locally produced ingredients and organic products.
