This 14-year-old Balvenie Week of Peat is part of the new 'Balvenie Stories' series. It replaces the old Peat Week bottling. The distillate remains the same, but the whisky gains in history. The story of this whisky is about Ian Millar, the distillery manager of the distillery, who took a trip to the island of Islay and then wanted to experiment with what he had learnt there. And so smoky distillate was distilled at Balvenie for just one week. The Highland peat used has a higher proportion of non-phenolic content. This results in an earthy, smoky character without the salty, maritime flavours that can be found in Islay whiskies, for example.

The Scottish Malt Whisky distillery The Balvenie is located on the slopes of the Convals, below the Glenfiddich distillery. It was built in 1892 by William J. Grant, who is also the founder of the sister distillery Glenfiddich.

On the nose there's a nice smokey floral note with honey and a bit of spice in the background. Also some dry cocoa and oak notes. With water a somewhat intense, very pleasant lemon note appears with some lovely vanilla.
On the palate, unexpectedly sweet, peat smoke is more subtle than the nose would suggest, there's a bit of dry lemon and oak. With water the smoke gets a bit stronger and after a while a really nice dark chocolate note comes out.
The finish is okay, middle long, peat smoke and oak.
Overall a nice different take on a peated whisky and also on a Balvenie, nice but not outstanding if I'm honest.
With a good amount of water it will get a little hollow so go slow but it will also become interestingly delicate.
