Michter's Shenk's Homestead Sour Mash Whiskey is produced using the traditional sour mash method, in which part of the already fermented mash is added to the new batch. The mashbill with clear rye accents provides a spicy basic structure. Maturation takes place exclusively in American oak, with selected barrels made from chinquapin wood lending additional depth and aromatic complexity. Chinquapin wood is considered to be particularly flavour-promoting due to its dense structure and pronounced vanilla and spicy notes and is therefore specifically selected for high-quality maturation in cask form. At 45.6% vol., this small-batch whiskey is full-bodied and balanced. Notes of rye spice, fine sweetness and gentle wood flavours characterise its character. Shenk's Homestead Sour Mash honours the legacy of whiskey pioneer John Shenk, whose distillery founded in 1753 later became known as Michter's and still stands for quality craftsmanship from Kentucky today.

Michter's is one of the most traditional American Whiskey distilleries, with a history dating back to 1753. Founded by John Shenk in Pennsylvania, continued by Abraham S. Bomberger, marked by Prohibition and changes in ownership, it was given the name Michter's in the 1950s. In the 1990s, production was moved to Kentucky and modernised. It takes place at three locations: the Shively Distillery, the Fort Nelson Building and the farm near Springfield.
