The Depaz distillery, near Saint Pierre in Martinique, has an extensive history dating back to 1917. Victor Depaz founded it at a time characterised by the destruction caused by the volcanic eruption of Montagne Pelée. The region was once an important rum port and Victor's family had long managed the La Montagne estate, which was initially used for tobacco and indigo cultivation before sugar cane cultivation began.

After the eruption of the volcano, Victor lost his family and returned to Martinique to set up the distillery. The Château Depaz, which he built there, became the family home. In the 1950s, his sons André and Raoul took over the company and modernised it.
