To honour Alexandre Gabriel's 20th anniversary as Master Blender at Plantation, the Plantation XO 20th Anniversary was created from a combination of typical extra old molasses rums from Barbados. The rum is first matured for many years in bourbon barrels in Barbados and then transferred to the southwest of France for further maturation in small French Ferrand oak barrels. The mix of so-called tropical ageing and continental ageing is a procedure known as 'double aging', which is over a hundred years old. It gives the rum a balanced smoothness and complexity. The tropical ageing lasts 8-15 years before the continental ageing of 2-10 years. These include new white oak barrels, bourbon barrels and, for the final maturation, ex-cognac barrels from Ferrand.
